1st Malaria World Congress

01 July 2018 - 05 July 2018

First Malaria World Congress 2018 1st - 5th July 2018 Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne, Victoria

About Malaria report:
Malaria is without doubt one of the world’s leading health problems causing death and severe illness to millions each year at a scale that entrenches poverty and disadvantage in major swathes of the world. Despite impressive advances over the last decade, malaria remains a huge global and regional threat. The recently released World Health Organisation 2017 World Malaria Report is a salutary reminder that we are indeed at a tipping point which could go either way.

 OBJECTIVES:

  1. Facilitation of collaboration between practitioners of scientific innovation, health systems delivery, community, government and non-governmental organisations
  2. Position malaria elimination within the Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals
  3. Strengthen political commitment and action towards malaria elimination
  4. Address gaps in knowledge and communication within and across sectors to meet elimination targets.

 THREE KEY THEMES:

  1. Malaria Today - The recent history and present of malaria control and elimination efforts.
  2. Putting Malaria Elimination into a Global Health Context - How malaria sits within the broader global health context, with focus on the Sustainable Development Goals, Universal Health Care and health security.
  3. Meeting the Challenges of Malaria Eradication - How we move forward together to enable sustainable impact in malaria endemic countries.

 FOUR PILLARS for these theme:

The First Malaria World Congress is committed to striving for gender balance by:
  • Ensuring balanced female and male representation in the invited speakers, proffered talks and session chairs at the conference
  • Ensuring committees such as the conference organising committee, program committee and scientific advisory board are gender balanced.
  • Building in support structures that facilitate attendance at the conference by women and men with dependents.

Way forword:

Malaria elimination is a priority issue in 2018. Following on from the malaria event to be held in conjunction with the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting (CHOGM) in London in April, 2018, this Congress will be a critical step in keeping up and building upon the political momentum created at the April event. The Malaria World Congress will be the opportunity to work through implementation issues not possible in a one day meeting putting a strong focus on cross-sector collaboration.
